Policy and Government Relations - ILLUMINATING ENGINEERING SOCIETY (IES)

POSITION SUMMARY:

With the upcoming retirement of Bob Horner, we are now seeking applicants for the Policy and Government Relations position. The IES Policy and Government Relations function is responsible for establishing the IES as the main source of expertise in the lighted environment among federal, state, and local governments. It also acts as a resource for policy makers responsible for legislative and regulatory activity. This position promotes IES Policies, Positions, and Standards to governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGO) as baselines upon which legislation, regulations, and/or policies should be built. This position requires knowledge of the legislative and regulatory process, lighting related codes, standards and policies, and illumination engineering skills to make proper assessment of their possible impacts on the lighting industry. Verbal and written communications skills are required to develop and maintain the IES position in a broad spectrum of coalitions and partnerships with advocacy NGOs, trade associations, related technical societies, and government agencies. The position requires occasional attendance at federal hearings and briefings and meetings with congressional members or their staff as part of these coalition efforts. Responsibilities also include updating Society members, Staff, and Board of Directors on important public policy issues. This position reports to the IES Industry Relations Manager and will assist in joint-venture Standards development activities with allied organizations and other Standards Development Organizations. The position is open for remote location employment, and requires travel flexibility to meet the job demands.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitor federal, state, and local government agendas and actions for items impacting the industry, recommend responses, identify proactive measures, and maintain lines of communications with elected officials and government agencies.
  • Advise Industry Relations Manager and Director of Standards and Research on pending legislative and regulatory activity affecting lighting and energy efficiency and on other applicable policy initiatives. Communicate with membership via articles, reports, oral briefings, and social media.
  • Join and participate in coalitions, other organizations’ policy-oriented committees, and networking events. Develop and maintain relationships with NGOs (non-governmental organizations), government agencies, utility alliances and certain congressional members/staffers.
  • Work with allied organizations in developing Standards and policies to ensure consistency with IES Standards and policies.
  • Coordinate with Standards and Research Department to ensure consistency and compatibility between IES Standards/ committees and public policy issues.
  • Together with the Industry Relations Manager, keep watch on industry trends and assess partnership opportunities with new market drivers and/or influencers (examples: health and high-tech market sectors).
  • Together with the Industry Relations Manager and Director of Standards and Research, develop long term policy strategy as part of our long-term advocacy plan for approval by the Executive Director and IES Board of Directors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in lighting, engineering or architectural field; or minimum 10 years’ experience in lighting industry including involvement with industry codes, standards, government relations, and/or public policy.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience with lighting-related codes, standards, and government legislation/regulatory activity
  • Demonstrated familiarity with ANSI document process
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ASHRAE/IES documents and process
  • Demonstrated experience and familiarity with IES allied organizations

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and develop new products such as; emergency lighting LEDs drivers, emergency lighting low frequency inverters, and other new products relating to lighting electronics that meet specified quality, reliability, performance, and costs targets.
  • Design and develop battery charger & battery management circuits.
  • Design, coordinate, and hold design reviews, providing deliverables such as: complete Bill-of-Materials, block-diagrams, schematics, drawings, PCB design documentation, specifications, test data results, and other necessary documentation and information.
  • Sr. Lead Development Engineer on team projects. May supervise or coordinate the work of other engineers, PCB & Mechanical, technicians Prepare completed working prototype samples, including samples for the UL Client Test Data program, and production.

The Director will lead and manage all Society functions related to membership services. The Director is responsible for implementing strategies to provide exceptional member service, and to collaborate with other departments for recruitment and retention strategies to increase and maintain membership, nationally and internationally. Northeast Regional Sales Manager - BIRCHWOOD LIGHTING

We are looking for a seasoned lighting sales professional to join our family in this position. Birchwood Lighting is a customer driven company and the individual who joins our team will need to put the customer first.

This is a newly created position for us with the following responsibilities:

  • Manage, train and support our sales reps in the territory
  • Work with the V.P. of Sales to develop goals and implement sales strategies
  • Attend and work local tradeshows to support the sales reps
  • Schedule and make sales calls with our reps
  • Schedule and accompany reps and their clients on factory visits
  • Identify, nurture and grow national account sales penetration in the region
  • Identify customer needs and give input regarding new product development

The requirements for this position are as follows:

  • Must have a broad understanding of LED lighting technology
  • A minimum of seven years working in the lighting industry, three years of it in the field
  • Must live in the territory (Maine to Virginia) with access to a major airport
  • 50% or more overnight travel
  • Knowledge and experience with national account sales
  • BS or BA degree a strong plus
  • Ability to transport and demonstrate sizable and sometimes heavy fixtures for presentations

The compensation for this position is a base salary with a heavy emphasis on commission and bonus based on performance. We have a strong health insurance plan as well as a 401K plan with matching funds.

Design Engineer III/R&D Engineer - IOTA ENGINEERING

Position Summary

Design and develop emergency lighting drivers for LEDs, emergency lighting low frequency inverters, and other new products relating to lighting electronics, including controls, and interface circuitry. Also guide and direct design of PCBs, enclosures, packaging, and/or related equipment. Application of power electronics, switchmode power supply circuit design, and electronics for lighting, includes design of voltage, current, and power regulators, and analog & digital controls. Perform feasibility studies for new technologies and new product ideas, pre-development, and product development from conception to initial production. Conduct business at all times with the highest standards of personal, professional and ethical conduct.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop new products such as; emergency lighting LEDs drivers, emergency lighting low frequency inverters, and other new products relating to lighting electronics that meet specified quality, reliability, performance, and costs targets.
  • Design and develop battery charger & battery management circuits.
  • Design, coordinate, and hold design reviews, providing deliverables such as: complete Bill-of-Materials, block-diagrams, schematics, drawings, PCB design documentation, specifications, test data results, and other necessary documentation and information.
  • Sr. Lead Development Engineer on team projects. May supervise or coordinate the work of other engineers, PCB & Mechanical, technicians Prepare completed working prototype samples, including samples for the UL Client Test Data program, and production.
  • Guide and assist product engineers in the UL Client Test Data program, particularly as it applies to Failure Mode and Effects analysis for new or major redesigned products.
  • Develop and execute reliability studies, which includes successful on-site or off-site installations and conduct reliability tests and analysis for new or major redesigned products.
  • Write, document, and provide special manufacturing guidelines and test specifications for new products, materials, or processes.
  • Determine the proper materials that are to be used in each product and participate in test programs for new materials.
  • Specify and monitor tests for product compliance with the applicable standards required by qualifying agencies; i.e. UL, FCC, etc.
  • Evaluate product or material performance as necessary to support the Quality, Manufacturing, and Field Service functions.
  • Issue complete and concise reports regarding the performance of new or improved products, as well as competing products.
  • Participate in the initial production phase of manufacturing inquiries and problems.
  • Utilize analytical modeling tools, when applicable, to insure initial design can meet target specifications.
  • Other tasks as necessary

Skills:

  • Ability to conduct research, and quickly learn and adapt new technologies and apply toward the design of new electronic products
  • Skilled at hands-on bench-top design of electronics for lighting or related fields
  • Strong Electrical Engineering and technical skills with expert knowledge in an appropriate discipline
  • Ability to work with a team in a matrix organization and interact with and contribute to cross-functional teams
  • Ability to use personal computers, especially using spreadsheets and word processing software
  • Analytical and problem solving skills and good organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to manage a project and balance innovation and creativity with mindful regard to a project schedule with strong sense of urgency
  • Knowledge of UL standards and compliance standards such as FCC EMI
